The Artist Residency

Welcome to the SaltWater Road Performance Institute Artist Residency. We are located on a 5 acre residential site in Montgomery, Alabama. SaltWater Road is family owned and operated by 6th generation Alabamians. It was founded in 2020 by Jennifer Ligaya, OTR/L, Double MA, and current PhD Candidate of Performance Studies at Northwestern University. As such, each residency is uniquely catered to the artist, and is approached as a collaborative exploration. SaltWater Road's mission is to expand cultural research and exchange between artists across the globe and the American South, specifically the state of Alabama, beginning with the city of Montgomery. Artist Residents are invited to engage with Alabama to explore the intersections of justice and liberation through through their artistic practice. Our residency program provides a space for artists to engage with a specific research question that will guides their artistic and community engagement process. During their time in Alabama, artists are encouraged to connect with a community organization or resource that aligns with their artistic vision. We will work to support the relationship building process during each of the artists residencies. We believe in the power of art to create social change and are committed to supporting artists in their journey towards understanding what it takes to create a more just and liberated world.

Saltwater Road Performance Institute is a dynamic program that allows artists to engage in meaningful work. We are excited to provide a platform that encourages artistic, community, and archival growth while creating unique works of community driven art that showcase issues centered around justice and liberation. We understand the value of creative expression and its power to create change. Each of our artists will add value to our historical archive by sharing the results of their research with the SaltWater Road Performance Institute Research Archive. We believe that the creative process and structures for continued engagement and analysis are essential to the continued conversation around social justice. Community Engagement is central to the work of SaltWater Road Artist Residency. Artists are called to have identified approximately 3 sites to engage with during their residence.

SaltWater Road believes in the power of storytelling. As such Ethnographic processes are a vital element of community building and emgagement. Artists are called to have identified at least One community member in the state of Alabama to meet and commune with.

SaltWater Road Performance Institute believes in the importance of collective and community driven data gathering. For the SaltWater Road Artist residency, this involves the sharing of artists work and process.
